MABOSI'S STORY

2018-05-25

I did not decide to exercise to be slim but to be healthy. I remember the day I was told I have high blood pressure and I was shocked, I thought I was healthy all this time. So I asked the doctor what I could do and he gave me a medication referal letter.

The fact that I was expected to be on medication full time worried me, so I took a step and appraoched Curves Walker Drive. When I got there I was surprised that I could get a gym membership at such a low cost. They then measured me and told me that it was possible to lose weight and I didn’t really believe them, but was keen to try. I have weighed over 100kg for 6 years and I didn’t know that it could change.

I started small by going to Curves 4 days every week and doing the 30min workout. At first it seemed like the highest mountain for me but I told myself I was not going to quit. This was in March 2015, I started paying more attention to what I was eating by cutting bread from 6 slices to 2 for each meal and using less oil and sugar. I started buying magazines that gave healthy living tips.

I even used the DVD’s that came handy for Yoga. We are in 2018 now and I am still going strong. The other thing that helped me to understand my body was attanding the 5km and 10km races. This BOOSTED my confidence, and as a measure of how far I have come, I have entered the Mrs Port Elizabeth pageant and have been selected as one of the finalists  at 80kg’s - that is 20kg’s off from where I started - and 120cm in total. Thanks to my Curves coaches always being behind me and encouraging me to keep going strong on this journey.

Today I say thank you proudly to those women that were and still stand behind me. It shows that strength does not come from what you can do, it comes from overcoming things you once thought you couldn’t.
